Varsity Ice Hockey
Varsity competion in sport has been been present in the United Kingdom for centuries and the tradition of Varsity Ice Hockey has long been upheld by the annual Oxford-Cambridge Ice Hockey Varsity match, which has been played in some form since 1885. This game has been recognised by the IIHF as the first ever Ice Hockey match in Europe, although it is possible that the rules of the game played that day were in fact closer to the sport of Bandy than Ice Hockey. Either way the tradition of the Light and Dark Blues facing off on the ice began that day in St Moritz, and has continued ever since.
In the last 20 years, the increasing number of university Ice Hockey teams has allowed a greater number of students to represent their university in varsity competition. Due to the BUIHA operating outside of the BUCS system, most university clubs are actually formed from a number of different local universities. This, linked to the fact that a lot of UK varsity competitions are between two institutions representing a single city, has led to the appearance of a number of Intra Club Varsities such as the Nottingham and Sheffield Varsities which can boast crowds numbering in the thousands.
Celtic Cup & Plate

the Cardiff Redhawks and the Edinburgh Eagles
The Celtic Cup was founded in 2005 with the first match being held in 2006. It is a British University Ice Hockey competition to feature any Celtic teams who join the British Universities Ice Hockey Association. Initially the competition consisted of a one-off match held each year between Cardiff Redhawks and Edinburgh Eagles. Eventually a second game was held between the B teams belonging to each club. The Edinburgh 'B'Eagles play the Cardiff 'B'Redhawks for the Celtic Plate. The distance between the two cities has proven prohibitive over the years, and as such this competiton has not been held in recent years.
