Posted on Mon 8th November, 2021

The Great Britain Universities programme have named Mike Szollosy as the head coach of the Men’s ice hockey team.

Szollosy has a depth of experience across UK hockey leagues including the NIHL and University set up.

Ryan Rathbone, Head of International Programmes said on the appointment, “Mike is a great addition to the set up, his knowledge of the game and players is what’s needed to continue moving the programme forward. Im looking forward to seeing the programme strive forward.”

On his appointment Szollosy said “I'm absolutely thrilled and deeply honoured to take the post of Men's GBU coach. Since moving from Canada to Sheffield over 20 years ago, I've been really fortunate to have found such a rich and welcoming hockey community here in the UK. The BUIHA, specifically, have been a massive part of that, and it's been amazing to watch university ice hockey grow in this country from just a few teams dotted about the country to where we are now, catering for hundreds of players, elite and beginners alike, and running a growing national programme. The chances to face-off against the GBU Men's team as coach of the International All-Stars teams have been some of my most memorable hockey moments, and I've learned a lot from working with players of such quality, both in the BUIHA and through coaching junior and senior teams here in Sheffield. I'm so excited to be working with Ryan and the GBU team, and the talented British university students.”
