• Time again for the Sheffield Varsity

Posted on Sun 6th February, 2011

The Sheffield Universities Ice Hockey Varsity is the most popular event in the Sheffield Varsity sporting calendar. It sees the teams from the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University face off against one another in a grudge match that has years of history.

In 2010 the spectacle was held at the Sheffield Arena for the first time, bringing in over 4,000 spectators to the game which was the deciding point for the Winter Varsity trophy. After such a successful event, the aim for 2011 is to fill the Sheffield Arena to capacity and provide fans with the most exhilarating University sporting event of the Varsity calendar. The match will be a curtain raiser for the Sheffield Steelers who have a rival match against Nottingham Panthers straight afterwards.

For 364 days of the year these two teams play together on a single Sheffield Universities team, The Sheffield Bears. Varsity is different. The Sheffield Bears will divide and represent their own University. See players from EPL, ENL 1 and 2 and BUIHA divisions 1 and 2 in a fierce game with heavy rivalry. Come along and enjoy the speed, skill, and sheer spectacle that is ice hockey- the fastest team sport in the world! There will be giveaways in-between the periods and entertain in the form on the local under 10's team playing a cross ice game.

Doors open at 2pm on Saturday 12th February 2011 @ Sheffield Motorpoint Arena. Tickets priced at 3 and are available online at www.motorpointarena.co.uk or from the arena box office. The game helps to raise money for the Sheffield children's hospital. Whether you hold an allegiance to one university over the other or you just want to enjoy an afternoon's entertainment please come and support this growing event and add yourselves to the electric atmosphere that is expected from this fantastic event.
