  • Dragons season starts with a bang!

Posted on Mon 14th November, 2016

It was a huge weekend for the Dragons, as both A and B teams skated onto the ice for the first competitive match-ups in 2016-17, and battled their way to two decisive wins over rivals Cambridge and Imperial!

On Saturday, newly appointed A team Captain Samuli Kanerva led the team to a sweet 4-1 victory over defending league Champions Cambridge Blues, racking up 2 goals and an assist in the process. The game was physical  and hard-fought (with 34 total penalty minutes on the scoresheet), and after London jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 10 minutes, the Blues responded with a lot of pressure in the offensive zone, forcing Dragons goalie Romain Tourenne to prove why he deserved Man of the Match. Facing a barrage of shots through the middle portion of the game, he stood tall, allowing only 1 puck past him out of 46 for a stellar 97.8 save percentage performance.

The fans in attendance were rewarded for staying out late to watch the game, with the passion from the Dragons team and management clear to see. Some even say the GM may have lost his voice for a few hours as a result...

Not one of the 14 player squad failed to contribute to the win, and all three coaches were pleased with the way the team worked together. Another huge game now looms for the A team as they welcome Oxford to the home barn on Saturday 19th. Spectators are, as ever, welcome to come along!

On Sunday, it was the turn of the B team to impress, and impress they did, beating London rivals Imperial Devils 8-4 in a friendly scrimmage that was a much closer competition than the final scoreline suggests. A hat-trick from new recruit Andreas Kallander and a pair of goals from stalwart Slovakian forward Denis Balko led the way, while a 4-man defensive core of MoM Rob Jeffreys, Anton Olsson, yours truly and Felix Reding-Reuter provided solid coverage at the back.

The success of both teams reflects the great atmosphere within the club this year, and the competitive drive that accompanies. Watch out BUIHA- the Dragons mean business!
