Oxford University Blues Info

The Oxford University Ice Hockey Club, known as O.U.I.H.C. is home to the Men’s and Women’s Blues ice hockey teams of the University of Oxford.  The Club is a student-run inclusive community of academic ice hockey players from Oxford and nearby institutions.  Oxford University matriculated students on the Men’s and Women’s Blues squads participate in the near 200-year old tradition of representing Oxford in the Varsity Match against Cambridge University. Varsity Match players get the opportunity to earn the prestigious Oxford Blue for their performance. The first Varsity Match recorded was in 1900 (likely a bandy match) but the origins of the club likely go as far back as 1885. In 1921, the OUIHC was formed as an official university club – uniting all ice hockey players at Oxford. Much like in 1921, the values of inclusion and unity are still upheld by the OUIHC today. In addition the club honours the tradition and privilege of the earning Oxford Blues in the Varsity Match as all first teams of Blues sports of Oxford University do.

Men’s ice hockey at Oxford, historically known as the Oxford University Ice Hockey Club (OUIHC), can trace its roots back to the apocryphal 1885 ice hockey/bandy match against Cambridge and the official Varsity Match of 1900. With the acquisition of Blues status from the University's Blues Committee in 1933,  the Oxford University team has annually played the Varsity Match against Cambridge for the coveted Oxford Blue award. With the absense of a Blues team for two seasons (2012-14),  a Blues team was reinstated in 2014 and has since been known in the league as the Oxford University Blues (one of three teams in the OUIHC). The Oxford team compete in the top division of the British University Ice Hockey Association (BUIHA). The team is comprised predominantly of Oxford University students, but also accepts staff, alumni and students from adjacent institutions, upholding the Club’s values of inclusivity, integration and development of university hockey in Oxford which were implemented in the first Club constitution in 1921.

  • Each season the Oxford Women’s Blues step onto the ice with a competitive spirit and determination to build on the talent from the previous year. Not only does the team represent Oxford in ice hockey, but it also draws on a combination of international and local talent. This year’s roster consists of players from Canada, USA, the UK, Sweden, Singapore, and Korea

We are proud to be one of the UK’s first women’s teams, having started in the 1981/1982 season along with the only other women’s team in the BUIHA, Cambridge. Since the beginning one of our key goals has been to foster hockey amongst women in the UK. While we emphasize competitive performance and professional sportsmanship, each year we also develop beginner and novice players by training a new cohort of rookies in practices and at our annual ice hockey camp.

Our head coach is Jen Brawn (University of Oxford '15), a former player for Harvard in North America's prestigious NCAA league. Assistant coaches are Luke Summers and Jack Woods, who both have considerable playing and coaching experience. The team trainer, Pollyanna Fitzgerald, runs an independent sports clinic  called 'Lightspeed Sports Recovery' and holds both a Bsc and Msc in Sport Coaching.

The Vikings traditionally play the second team Varsity Match against the Cambridge Eskimos, with the heritage of both teams dating back to the infant years of ice hockey in the UK.
